Anthony Quinn's Store Wine & Spirits' Email On # Chateau Grand Traverse, # Arizona Stronghold & # Texas Wines, Too Before Thanksgiving 2012 : Cheers, Happy Holidays!
Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
HAPPY DIWALI / Happy Festival of lights
I HOPE THAT WE HAVE ALREADY HELPED you all with what you need as today is Diwali
and it's gray, cold, raining and a great day to be inside already
well-provisioned. That would be the best. I looked into the Diwali holiday
earlier as I do not know the details and I read that it is Diwali/ Deepavali :
the festival of lights and the beginning of the Hindu New Year. I also learned
that it is celebrated by India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Mauritius. That
got my attention that Mauritius celebrates it as I have a good friend living
there now, Tatiana Maria that used to sell quite a great selection of wines from
Spain, Switzerland, Chile and Argentina, too. Oh, I forgot Portugal! Tatiana
stops to say " hello " to all of us when she comes through to visit her family
here and it's always a pleasure to see her.
IF YOU HAVE ANT " Last Minute " NEEDS for DIWALI please do come and see us. We
have lots of liquor " on sale " as I understand that that is enjoyed on this day
along with other things like wine and beer as well. Chris, one of our
salespeople for one of the big wholesalers ( National ) was just here doing a
fine job with our liquor displays : they have never looked better. Come check
out our Specials on : 1) ABSOLUT 1.75ml, On Special at $33.99, 2) Beefeater
1.75ml On Special at $28.99, 3) Jameson Irish Whisky On Special at $25.99, 4)
Absolute 750ml Holiday Collection bottles, 12 different ones in all On Special
for $20.99, and 5) Absolute Pear vodka On Special for $20.99. COME AND CHECK
THIS ALL OUT!
THERE'S A " Mail-In " $5 rebate here on the ABSOLUT vodkas. Come get some while
you still can, good for a purchase of any two ( 2 ) 750ml bottles of ABSOLUT
vodka. Great gifts, also fine for Diwali today! THE SUN'S COME OUT : it was
rainy, dreary, gray, wet, and cold earlier when I walked our dog and neither of
us enjoyed being outside then. It would be different now. This is all good news
as the temperature has dropped.
BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU is this Thursday and we have our very favorites : the MANOIR
DU CARRA Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages wines coming here and available for
sale this Thursday when it is legal to sell them. It is supposed to be available
for purchase every third Thursday of November and made with 100% Gamay grapes
and using the process called " carbonic maceration " to make the wines as fresh
and lively as possible. We will have open the bottles of the MANOIR DU CARRA for
you all to taste here this Thursday, November 15th, 2012. JOIN US> We will also
taste the GEORGES DUBOEUF and the BOUCHARD AINE PERE ET FILS as well. This will
be fun, this will be festive, come and celebrate the tradition : " LE BEAUJOLAIS
NOUVEAU EST ARRIVE ici chez Cleveland Park Wines Et Spirits! Cheers!!! Soyez
toujours bienvenues ici chez Cleveland Park Wines et Spirits! Call to order and
pay early : 202-363-4265.
SUNDAY WAS GLORIOUS for so many of us I am sure. I was outside raking and
bagging leaves in my shorts. I felt great and happy to be outside with our two
animals working hard to do a job that would be soon erased with more leaves
falling. Sure enough this morning as I looked outside much of my hard work was
gone and only the large bags filled with leaves told the story of the work
already accomplished.
THIS PAST SUNDAY EVENING with neighbors we enjoyed some excellent hummus and a
brie-made-with-goats'-milk and some of the Jed STEELE California wines : 1 ) the
Shooting Star Sauvignon Blanc and the 2) STEELE Old-Vines " Pacini " Vineyard
2008 Zinfandel. They were both excellent. Everyone liked both and I must say
that the Shooting Star Sauvignon and the STEELE Pacini old-vines Zinfandel that
Jed owns worked beautifully with our hors d'ouevres so well. The Zin and the
Hummus were to " tell great stories for ", " imagine great scenarios for ", "
relax and enjoy, smile, feel joy and absolute harmony, faith, contentment for "
... pretty much everything except to " die for " : reason being you can only die
once. You want to return for more of this type of contentment and joy when two
or more things complement each other so as they did this past Sunday evening.
Cheers. THIS PAST WEEKEND we had a KONA Brewing Company tasting of
three-of-the-four Hawaiian beers. They were all well-received and we have some
in our cooler and ready for immediate sale. We have in the front the " Big Wave
" Golden Ale On Special for 8.99 a six-pack 12 ounce bottles, 4.4% alcohol by
volume, ) : " ... making handcrafted ales and lagers of un-compromised quality
... catch the crest of a breaking wave and ride it all the way, in our
sun-drenched big wave golden is a smooth refreshing brew inspired by what makes
Hawaii great ". For more info go to : www.KonaBrewingCo.com. Cheers. ALSO THIS
PAST FRIDAY we had Jody Jackman of Winebow Imports here with us tasting two fine
" classics " in the wine world : 1) Pinot Grigio delle Venezia, the 2011
Italian dry white from ZENATO ( $12.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, www.zenato.it
) , and the 2) Malbec 2010 from CATENA from Mendoza, Argentina ( $22.99, 13.5%
alcohol by volume, , founded in 1902, 3rd and 4th generations : Nicolas and
Laura Catena ).
BOTH showed beautifully. The Pinot Grigio was fragrant and floral and had a
lovely accent of peach that I found very appealing this past Friday. So did many
of our customers as we sold quite a bit. The CATENA Malbec was flavorful, round,
forward and easy to sip with soft, generous tannins. What's not to like? That's
why it, too sells so well. BOTH are here in stock around our tasting table. Come
check them out and see what you think. The Malbec is perfect for this cold,
especially when the sun goes down. The ZENATO Pinot Grigio is perfect to sip
anytime all by itself. The owner Alberto Zenato came to see us years ago. We
have met Ernesto Catena here in the store that sells us his Alma Negra Blend dry
2009 ( $21.99, Mendoza, Argentina, www.almanegrawines.com.ar , 13.5% alcohol by
volume ).

many foods and flavors. Cheers.

character and another great food choice with again low alcohols. Made in the

Our Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits' Big-Theme Local Wines Wine-Tasting In Mid November 2011 Here @ Cleveland Park Wines, Featuring ELK RUN Vineyards ( Maryland ) & Many More! WE Have ALWAYS Supported Local Wines & GOING GREEN! Cheers!
Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirits
ALL IR MADNESS UNDER SOME CONTROL, we are doing so many things this week here
alone at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits. You know that the Beaujolais Nouveau
and the Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau can be legally sold by yus this Thursday?
Have you made plans to go to Lavandou just at the end of our block and enjoy a
meal there? I am sure it will be hopping there. Remember: you reserve a seat or
seats with a late-night dinner on Wednesday, tomorrow evening after of
Big-Theme American Wine-Tasting? You can come here tomorrow from 5:30-8:30PM
and meet owners Rachel Martin of the Boxwood in Middleburg, VA. winery as well
as Carol of ELK RUN in Mount Airy, Maryland : and Lawrence Camp of BREAUX
Vineyard in Virginia ( and many others as we will pour wines from all over the
United States as well as Bailey tasting her Washington D.C. homemade chocolates
). Join us, never any charge. There will be twenty-five-thirty wines for you
all to taste and that includes some great Virginia apple cider, too.
IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING " New " for us. That's the way we like it : be
inspired and touched by something " new ". We are excited about the Beaujolais
Nouveau this year : the reports so far have been very good that I have heard.
We will open them here on Thursday for you all to taste. We will have four in
all :
1) MANOIR DU CARRA 2011 Beaujolais, $9.99.
2) MANOIR DU CARRA Beaujolais-Villages 2011, $10.99.
3) GEORGES DUBOEUF Beaujolais 2011, $11.99.
4) BOUCHARD AINE Beaujolais Nouveau 2011, $9.99. Mix a case of these.
Throw your own " Nouveau " party for your friends and then have some to get you
through the end of this year and our fabulous holiday season.
WHAT Is NOUVEAU? It means " new ". What is BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU? It's all
made in Burgundy, France. It is all made from 100% Gamay grapes at the southern
tip of Burgundy. It's fun, it's fresh, it's lively, it's got a slight tart
edge, it's got a bit of a bite. It's toasty and roasted berries and a delight
to drink slightly chilled. It goes with everything : all casual meals as well
as more fancy ones. it's just a delight for most people. It's a tradition and
it has always been popular though many people in our country I feel still do
not know much about it. SO : either do your own party or go to a restaurant
like Lavandou or Bistro Lepic, the Bistro Du Coin, the Petits Plats and
celebrate and then continue celebrating at home with family and friends. It's
a way to welcome in the holidays. We can help you, too as you may start
celebrating earlier than later this Thursday. We will have the four bottles
open here all day long so come and " experience " this year's 2011 NOUVEAU with
us! If you have any questions please do ask us here at the store.
HOW IS NOUVEAU MADE? It's made with a longer process called " carbonic
maceration ". That means simply that the grapes are put into a tank and that as
they are put into the tank the pressure from those grapes on top of those below
crush the juice. This way the crush is as smooth and as gentle as it can get,
with the least amount of agitation to the grapes so that the juice that comes
from the grapes is as pure as and as least-disturbed as possible. That makes
the taste brighter and fresher - all good things.
NOUVEAU IS ALSO BEST WHEN MATCHED with food. You don't want to drink too much
all by itself because AS SOON AS IT'S FERMENTED it is bottled. This preserves
all the natural acidity of the Gamay grapes as there in NO BOTTLE AGE, NO
CONTACT WITH wood or oak, only bright and shiny stainless steel.
NOUVEAU is not made for aging. However, and this is a big however, it does not
go bad immediately. It simply is not intended to be around for a very long
time. Buy it and usually drink it all up over the holidays. You don't really
want to be drinking the spring after it was made. But don't panic, always check
what you have first before simply dumping the bottle out. Chill it and taste it
to see first what you still have. It does lose some of the acidity and soften
some as it ages over the months. That is quite agreeable to many as it takes
some of the sting and the bite away. But try and drink it up earlier than
later. MOST OF ALL : relax and enjoy the joy that beaujolais and
beaujolais-villages nouveau provides each and every year on the third Thursday
of each November.
LET'S NOT FORGET APPLE CIDER! We have the FOGGY RIDGE Virginia apple ciders
from Dugspur. Anyone ever been there? The owner herself has been here and
tasted me on these and we are thrilled to have them. They : all five that we
have will be tasted here tomorrow, Wed. Nov. 16th, 2011 ( 5:30-8:30PM ) at our
Big-Theme American Tasting. It will be a breath of fresh air after the wines to
have some apple cider : Handmade, Serious Hard, Cider Sweet, First Fruit Hard
and Pippin for you all to taste. Remember there is no charge. Please join us
and bring family and friends.
BUT HEY, what about some BEER FROM SANTOS?
1) John John Ale from ROGUE ( On Special for $10.99, 1 Pt. 6 Fl. Oz,
Newport, Oregon ) is made from 7 ingredients and has a deep honey color, a malt
aroma , caramel and vanilla in the mid palate and an oak finish. Nice.

this. I wish I had Alexis here now to wax poetic on it because it is truly one
of a kind.
3) " Desir " French cognac from the house of LANDY ( $74.00 a bottle )
is " new " and really special and exciting here. We are thrilled to have it.

Talking About GREAT LAKES Beer & The 9:30 Club When We Saw The Group Young Man Play With Drummer Dylan Andrews In Mid Novemeber 2011! Cheers, Happy Diwali Today, Tuesday November 5th, 2013, Got Out & Voted This Morning For NEW Virginia Governor!
Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirits
THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO STOCK UP Early as between Ravi, Santos, Ean & I we have
ordered and received many great beers, ales, liquors and liqueurs, wines and
ciders, too. It's nice to see so many wonderful choices now, for example with
ciders that are gluten free and sometimes organic, too. This category seems to
be getting a whole lot of attention recently. Ravi just got some great Kahlua
gift sets, too. We are also getting ready to receive our Beaujolais Nouveau
from our favorite producer MANOIR DU CARRA. We even will have some football
wines for the holidays as well as some " Santa's Little Helper " dry California
red. The wines is already here and will make some great " stocking-stuffers "
all by themselves.
IT'S SUCH A SMALL WORLD , really. I have a pretty amazing story to relate to
you all. Last night my wife, son, and his good girlfriend and I were at the
9:30 Club to see the " new " singing sensation YOUNG MAN. The drummer is a
great family friend and so we were thrilled to be there. When we got there for
the first time ever and stood on the big floor in front of the stage I remarked
that we were definitely the youngest people there with a bunch of old geezers!
That shocked me : first time in such a situation really. Oh well. We were there
for a good show and YOUNG MAN ( they have a really good video called " Enough "
on You Tube. Check it out - really cleaver and artsy and I really liked it )
and our drummer friend.
IT'S A SMALL WORLD because as our drummer friend and I both sipped our
Negro Modelo beers ( $7 a piece ) and I sketched quick portrait sketches of all
the band members in their private rooms behind the stage one of the young men
wearing a Great Lakes Brewing t-shirt asked me if at Cleveland Park Wines &
Spirits we sold anything besides wine? I smiled and said immediately that we
did. At that point he told me that he was the son of one of the two owners of
the Great Lakes Brewing Company! Wow, I loved that. I think that they will all
be coming to the store today before tonight's performance which by the way is
sold-out. We are lucky that we got tickets through our friend.
I TOLD THE PIANO PLAYER of YOUNG MAN that we had just done a really successful
beer dinner with his family's Great Lakes Brewery beer selections at Dino
ristorante. He liked hearing that.
WE SELL MOST of the various 6-packs of the GREAT LAKES Brewing Co. like the "
Burning River " On Special for $9.99 and the seasonal release 4-pack "
Blackout Stout " On Special at $10.99. I will ask to get some of these packs
signed as gifts for all of you lovers out there of the GREAT LAKES Brewing
Co.'s great beer selections. Check with me when you come later today or this
week and I will fill you all a bit more on this fun development. Imagine that :
I had to go to the 9:30 Club to meet a family member of the GREAT LAKES Brewing
Company! Go figure ...
CHOCOLATE ANYBODY? We have Bailey Kasten returning for our next American
Big-Theme Wine-Tasting on Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 from 5:30-8:30PM to
taste an assortment of their really fine chocolates. After the tasting we will
also have a small display case up front and sell the chocolates for special
gifts and just plain treats for ourselves when we feel the urge, desire, need
or want. This is what Bailey writes about her homemade chocolates : "
Double Premium Confection creates natural, high quality, handmade chocolates,
caramels, and treats right here in Washington, D.C. area. Our chocolates
feature unique flavor combinations made out of only the finest natural
ingredients. In addition, we also have seasonal favorites like our very popular
Pumpkin Spice Truffle. Do Come down to Cleveland Park Wines for our free
tasting where we will be sampling out our customer favorites! "
WE ARE INVITING a number of people to participate in this upcoming American
Big-Theme Wine0Tasting and that includes owner Rachel Martin of the BOXWOOD
Winery in Middleburg, Virginia that will be here to pour her 2009 " new "
releases of both the " Boxwood " and the " Topiary " Bordeaux-styled/inspired
red blends of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes. The "
Boxwood " dry red blend is made like the Bordeaux wines from the Left Bank and
the " Topiary " dry red blend is made like the wines from Bordeaux's " Right
Bank ". They even come in half bottles. Those would make great
stocking-stuffers as well. The 375ml bottle of the 2008 " Boxwood " sells for
$17.99 and we have it here now. It's a hearty, more robust, more angular and
steely version of a dry red Left-Bank Bordeaux that will really benefit a lot
from being served with a meal as needs the food to help flesh out it's flavors.
It can easily be cellared much longer : no need to rush the 2008 vintage : it's
a keeper.
LIKE I SAID, we also have a GREAT DEAL from Ravi now with his KAHLUA Gift
Box which includes a bottle of KAHLUA Rum and Coffee Liqueur and three small
187 bottles of : 1) Hazelnut, 2) French Vanilla and 3) Mocha to help spice
up any occasion. They are also easy to travel with and enjoy just about
anytime. They also come with a nice shiny deep brown colored mugs. The cost for
all of this On Special is $16.99. You only pay for the regular-sized bottle and
the other four items are all free.
BUT HEY, It's not even Christmas time yet ( it's not even Thanksgiving yet
) and here we already have the Santa's Little Helper " Proprietary Red Wine
2010 dry California red blend at $14.99 a bottle. It's really quite good. Greg
that was working with us really liked the idea and so I said : " okay, let's do
it! " I think any of you wanting a good California dry red at $15 and a holiday
theme on the label will be delighted with this wine. It certainly over-delivers
for the price. That was the other reason that we bought it.
WE ALSO HAVE FOOTBALL REDS ON the way here as I type away madly at this
Apple computer of mine. They are named after some of the most famous " plays "
of our many beloved football teams. They should be here within a couple of
weeks and they will sell for $17.99 a bottle. The VON STRASSER Diamond Mountain
vineyard people are behind this in California and so you can be sure that the
wines will be really good. So stay-tuned and keep an eye peeled for these three
special " football " bottling.
AND BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU is just around the corner. More French Nouveau :
Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages Nouveau all coming our way. We have our
favorites again from MANOIR DU CARRA coming : 1) Beaujolais Nouveau 2011 at
$9.99 a bottle and the 2) Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2011 at $10.99. They are
really lovely with a big more guts and brawn at $10 and a bit more finesse and
polish at $11. Buy some of both. Gamay the grape for these wines is a perfect
Thanksgiving wine as the higher level of natural acids in these wines will cut
through the sauces and the more spicy and strong flavors and seasonings in our
holiday fair foods. WE ALSO HAVE some of the BOUCHARD AINE & FILS Beaujolais
Nouveau coming : 3) BOUCHARD AINE Beaujolais Nouveau at $9.99 a bottle. This
is another " tried and true " offering. We also very much like working with
this house and have a " killer " Pinot Noir from them here on a regular basis
that we sell for $9.99 and that is a favorite with many of you.
BEERS From Santos : What You Up To Santos?
1) Hooligan Stout Draft Ale " Old Schoolhouse " Brewery, from Winthrop,
WA. ( $6.99, 1 pint 6 fluid ounces )is " a robust dark beer with lots of
chocolate malts, designed for hooligans who demand something more from their
beer."
2) Walker's Reserve Porter from FIRESTONE WALKER Brewing Company ( On

Firestone and David Walker.

LIQUORS / LIQUEURS From Ravi : Share :
1) Superieur Cognac Fine Champagne from A. De FUSSIGNY is exciting and in
a great " new " Pumpkin-colored box holiday-packaging at $52.99 a bottle. Great
gift, looks fun and fancy and something great to celebrate with at the end of
the evening.

) are On Special for $15.99 and NOW : IF YOU BUY ONE you get the second one
FREE! What a deal. Fun-packaging as well.
FUN WINES :Ean & Tony's Picks :
WHITES :
1) Chardonnay 2009 From ALPAMANTA, This " Natal " from Mendoza, Argentina
( $13.99 ) blew me away gradually and lifted me up and I floated away in it's
balloon-mushrooming effect of expanding flavors that were so fresh and lively
and " original " in scope that I just had to buy it. When owner Andrej told me
that it was also the first bio-dynamic vineyard in Mendoza I simply had to add
it to our selections. It's rich and flavorful and must be tasted as it's an
original.
2) Jurancon sec 2008 " Chant Des Vignes - Song of the Vines " is On
Special for $19.99 ( originally $25-$30 : made from the gros manseng I believe.
What a wonder it is : like no other indigenous dry and flavorful white grape
variety. Dan Phillips the owner of the Grateful Palate was just here trying to
sell me some of his " Bitch " Spanish Garnacha-Grenache from Aragon. He saw the
DOMAINE CAUHAPE here and picked up a bottle and said that Gros Manseng was his
favorite dry white grape varietal. That's nice Dan. Tomorrow Ean and I will try
your Bitch Spanish Aragonian Garnacha and see what we think. I believe it will
sell for $11-$12 a bottle.
3) Cremant De Bourgogne Brut 2005 Pur Pinot Noir and also a Pur Chardonnay
: both sparkling French wines from Burgundy and BOTH On Special for $14.99 a
bottle! Regularly they are $17-$18 a bottle now and so these few remaining
cases represent GREAT DEALS for those of you that love more complex and
concentrated dry bubbly.
4) " Bosca Di Giga Brut Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG ( $13.99 for
a half-bottle - 375ml bottle ) from ADAMI is pretty gosh-darn wonderful. And a
handy size for a picnic, too.
5) Colombana 50%, Vermentino 40% and Malvasia 10% 2009 indigenous Tuscan
whites blended together by FONTE Delle DONNE ( $17.99 ) from FATTORIA FIBBIANO
is a real delight. Totally unique, of the region, of that particular soil -
indigenous all the way baby! Just like I like it, what about you?!?
REDS :
1) Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Reserva from Chile's Maule Valley, this CASA
PATRONALES ( $10.99 ) really impressed me no end the other day when I tried it
with the national sales manager. I think that it way over delivers for the
money and that's something that I did not know until the end when I asked the
price? I was assuming that it would be much more expensive. When he told me the
price I immediately said : " Send it. " That's how good it is. really a little
gem. A must-try people.
2) Toscana 2009 Sangiovese 70%, 30% Colorino " Le Pianette " dry red
Italian blend from FATTORIA FIBBIANO is made true to classic style and
flavorful, aromatic, all the traditional belles and whistles ( $14.99 ) and so
distinct and wonderful. I met one of the owners as well as was impressed with
everything that he made! Wow, really a treat.
3) Pinot Noir 2008 from France's Pays D'Oc is On Special for $9.99 and
again way over delivers for this price. It's pretty nice any way that you look
at it. What great flavors and it actually tastes like Pinot Noir without other
grapes added to it.
4) Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Organic from Mendoza, Argentina and made by
ALPAMANTA is another one of those really lovely wine experiences for me that
opened my eyes. I loved it when I tried it with Andrej the owner a few week's
ago. It's wonderful and memorable. Definitely at $21.99 worth every penny and
worth your looking for it and buying a bottle to enjoy with your meal.
WEEK'S TASTINGS :
Friday, November 11th, 2011 ( 5-8PM ) : We have Jody Jackman coming to
taste an assortment of her wines. This will be fun. Jody always brings
something " extra " to the table. We have lots of Jody's wines here and have
some great wines to chose from but I think that this tasting will be all
California from PINE RIDGE : reds and whites including a Chardonnay that really
blew me away it was so impressive : really distinct and tasty.
Saturday, November 12th, 2011 ( 2-6PM ) : We have Dawana coming to taste
from Margaux & Company Imports and that will be fun. She has been tasting us on
a series of wines from France and Virginia. She has a killer white Burgundy (
Remossenet Pere et Fils, $21.99 ) and an equal " killer " Alsace dry white, not
to mention some great red Rhones. We will also probably fit a Virginia wine in
somewhere, too? It will be fun. Join us : Dawana is a lot of fun to be around
just like Jody. JOIN US. NEVER any charge. Bring family and friends.
I AM SURE THAT I HAVE FORGOTTEN MANY THINGS - sorry, come visit us. Let us
assist you in any way that we can. Thanks, thank you for everything. Cheers,
TONY

WE'LL START OFF WITH Saying : Boo! Happy Halloween!
IT'S THIS THURSDAY and we are getting set up for it now as time is running out! Come by and see what we have organized for you all? You never know what we might come up with here?!? There's always that great element of surprise here that we reserve for you all. BREAKING NEWS :
BOXWOOD Winery Dinner TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 30th, 2013 @ PULPO Restaurant starting at 6:30PM : 4 Courses, 5 BOXWOOD Virginia wines : $95 a person. Call general manager Dave Hansen @ PULPO : 202-450-6875, and go to : www.pulpodc.com for more information as well. There's still room for this coveted event with owner Rachel Martin of BOXWOOD Winery to conduct this FABulous dinner and wine-food pairing meal in a really fun space, too.
WE ARE THRILLED TO BE ENTRENCHED HERE in our Cleveland Park neighborhood of Northwest Washington D.C.
WE'RE NOT alone : we are a part of many events and people, businesses, schools, concerns. I want to take a brief moment to talk about the CPBA ( Cleveland Park Business Association ) that we are involved in.
I HAVE BEEN GOING to the meetings now for about three years as we have met and discussed and formed a group of dedicated business owners that are very much an integral part of the community.
WE STARTED FROM SCRATCH and have arrived at a point where we will piece many of the final loose pieces together by the end of this year and really start strong next year. We care and believe in Cleveland Park.
I HAVE GOTTEN TO KNOW and see many of the various owners/ managers up and down this two-block stretch and that has been pleasing and rewarding. I'm enriched by this extra contact with our business community that does it's very best to serve you as very best as it possibly can, We're in this together : we sink and we swim together.
AND NOW THERE'S MORE TALK about changing the service road out front. Judy Hubbard that was here this weekend says that this next meeting at the Cleveland Park Library will be to discuss this further with the community and then a recommendation will be made finally to the D.C. City Council about whether to leave it or to adopt one of the three proposed for changing it and the block at Porter and Connecticut Avenue. There will be updates to follow.
GO TO THE NEXT MEETING at the Cleveland Park Library and have your voices heard.
THERE'S ALWAYS A CERTAIN LEVEL OF skepticism and questions, and that's tough. Well. I have been involved since the start I believe and I have personally witnessed as we have worked to make something that we can all be proud of that will hopefully serve our community that is ours.
IT HASN'T BEEN EASY at times but we have been patient and have persevered. We have met with the famous Main Street people that are based here in Washington and we have listened to them outline what we must do and we are busy doing that as we are busy serving our many customers, too.
IT'S A LOT OF shuffling and planning and longer hours but it's fallen together pretty magnificently and we will all see the benefits that we can bring to our community when we all work together.
I WILL BE BLOGGING further about this and including it on Facebook and tweeting, too. I have some wonderful pictures from our meetings and will include those when we have met at the 4-P's, Lavandou restaurant and now at Ripple. So stay-tuned for more and please feel free to comment and express any of your concerns and ask any questions that you may have? Respond to this email or call me at : 202-363-4265,
I HOPE EVERYONE WILL HALLOWEEN. WE had a number of people come here dressed up and looking really nice this past weekend : tigers and cats and various scary and spooky characters. I wish that I had taken some pictures like I had in the past.
HALLOWEEN DAY is this Thursday, October 31st : are you ready? My daughter keeps asking me if I have decided on what I will wear for my costume? I responded that I would pick something if she would go trick-or-treating with me? That would be nice.
BY THE WAY WE HAD A LOCAL SUPPLIER make a suggestion : that perhaps if we had a few more national and popular brands that we would have more people shopping here? Are there any popular brands that you'd like to see here that you would rather buy from us than a Safeway or a Giant, Wholefoods, Harris Teeter, Trader Joe's?
REMEMBER THAT WE ARE simply one operation, not a national chain. It's amazing what our buying power can and has done. WE come up with some spectacular prices for you all even if I do have to say so myself. Usually I let you say it for us but after so many years of doing this here I am proud of what we have accomplished as a small independent store.
THE LARGE CHAINS do not need to worry whether they make money on the sale of wines as they can make it back on the sale of their food. It's just an additional item for them amongst many already; and they are not specialists in the field of ciders, liqueur, liquor or wine as we are. That fortunately keeps us in this very competitive game today as you come and see us when you really do need some sound advice and help. Thanks for that.
WE WANT TO BE HERE for you but we do not want to have to always sell a national brand because we buy less of it than these national chains.
I CALL THIS APPROACH : " Adding to the equation, not duplicating it ".
THAT'S MY / our approach. We cannot match every price and so what we can do well is offer you many things you will not readily see in these larger, national venues that are just adding wine and spirits where they can as " an extra ".
AS I JUST SAID it's not their field of expertise : it's not their main livelihood.
I REMEMBER GOING TO an ANC meeting where Wallgreens wanted to add some wine sales to their store because they wanted to " more to their customers ". My response was : " Well then why don't we start selling some drugs to be more to our customers as well ? " I went on to say : " Why don't we all sell everything then so that we can be everything to every customer? "
I KNOW, it's already been tried.
MY POINT IS that we specialize, are specialists in what we do. Having said this, however I still want to know if we can be more to you with any national brands? Let us know? Thanks. Your opinions are essential to us, really our bread-and-butter : essential. Thanks.
IT'S ALMOST NOVEMBER and the sun's out and it's cool and breezy and the sky's blue. Pretty nice and already some of our favorite wines are pouring once again through our doors. The same is true for our beer. We have just checked in some really good beers and wines. It's the perfect weather now to enjoy some of both.

Anthony Quinn's Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits' Store Email Written & Posted A Year Ago in November 2012 : Enjoy : Lots About Virginia Wines Like BOXWOOD Winery!
Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
LIKE A ROLLER COASTER these days for all of us. We have so much going on and the
world keeps knocking and bombarding us with information, news, opinions, and
more and so we carry more stress and worry with us. The fall foliage is
spectacular with all the incredible colors of reds, oranges, yellows, shades of
browns and greens. Impressive. There have been many sports games such as the
Redskins, the Nationals, our soccer team ... with both wins and losses and thus
highs and lows. The debate with President Obama and Mitt Romney last night, the
scandal with Lance Armstrong and the rest of his team ... and many personal
events, too : too many to count or even know about. I have four amazing wine
success stories to share with you as well.
THIS WEEKEND was one of many celebrations : of friendship, a birthday and to
mark the moment some great wine was brought from our cellar. Two separate
nights, and some old wines were enjoyed. I will mention two here. You can ask me
about the other two when you see me here in the store.
LAST NIGHT BEFORE THE DEBATE I made dinner and to mark the birthday of a dear
friend we opened a bottle that had been properly cellared by him and that had
escaped his notice for a very long time. It was a bottle of Sancerre 1983 Silex
" Les Belles Dames " from GITTON PERE ET FILS. It had a great fill ( no wine was
gone from the bottle neck ) and the cork was still very much intact and came out
easily, even after 29 years' of bottle age! The cork smelled fine, the bouquet
of the wine was fine, and when I poured it the color was a beautiful golden
color. The taste was all there, the focus, the citrus and the mineral, the
accents of creamy nut came out much later. Each sip was a celebration. Each
taste was a revelation. How could a dry bottle of French Loire Valley white 100%
Sancerre of 29-years of age still be so charming, vibrant, filled with
personality?!? It was a true gem and it never faded, not once. After the meal I
made I took a glass downstairs to enjoy during the debate. The bottle was
imported by the Mayflower Wines & Spirits in Mayo, Maryland and now represented
by Bacchus Imports I think?
THE SECOND BOTTLE I want to mention was enjoyed the night before. I grilled
again outside and our guests were outside with me as I grilled. This was an
evening celebrating a long and wonderful friendship and one of the bottles I
chose to open and share with everyone was a bottle of the 1983 Cornas northern
Rhone from Alain Voge and imported then by World Shippers in Philadelphia that
has just recently closed it's doors after a long and glorious run of business (
where Bobby Kacher started his importing career so long ago ). It. too was a
marvel and had survived beautifully. The color was bright ruby red and so
vibrant, the bouquet, too was mesmerizing and drew me closer. The taste was
silky and charming and full and rich and elegant and so pleasing with everything
in it's place and performing like a great orchestra. We all loved it and talked
off-and-on about it's age and how deceiving that was with such a red , bright
color and a taste that was so fresh and fruit-forward - almost like an old
Burgundy, just a bit fuller with other accents of spice and toasty berry
flavors.
A COUPLE OF LESSONS HERE : that wine well-stored/ cellared can really survive
well; and that some wine was and still is made to age and develop and does not
need to be enjoyed immediately. We have to recognize when we should drink a
wine, and certainly not before it's time. Those were the last two bottles of
these wines, one from my cellar and one from my friend's. What a wonderful treat
and surprise. The Cornas which is made from the Syrah grape threw a thick and
heavy sediment that settled to the bottom of the bottle. I took a taste just to
see what I would find and it was sweet and soft and did dry my palate just
slightly but was certainly not unpleasant.
COME AND ASK ABOUT any old bottles that you may have and are curious about? We
can help you with that, look at the bottle for you and give you our best advice
about when and how to enjoy any of these bottles. For both on the two separate
nights I set out some cheeses and crackers and I abstained from having any of
them as I wanted to focus all my attention on the wines and not be distracted. I
also did not want the cheeses to rob me of any of the flavors of each wine as
they unfolded and opened in both the bottle and my INAO glass. I know I would
have enjoyed the cheeses but I only get a chance once in awhile to enjoy
something so old and spectacular.
HALLOWEEN IS COMING! We still have many Pumpkin beers : too many to list here.

high-alcohol beer as you would a glass of fine wine. Cheers and enjoy.

WINES By MICHEL Et TONY :
WHITES :
1) HILLCREST SAuvignon Blanc 2011 from Durbanville, South Africa ( $19.99 ,
13.5% alcohol by volume ) was just tasted here this past Saturday by John and
Theresa Morrison. It's bright, fresh, lively, with a clarity and a focus that's
pure delight - liquid sunshine filtered through Sauvignon Blanc, what else could
anyone want? Cheers.
2) SANDRO DE BRUNO Indigenous dry white made from the Durello grape (
$22.99, 13% alcohol by volume, www.il-pioppo.com , from Veneto, Italy ) is
clean, crisp, flavorful and with great mineral, it's fabulous with a meal. The
owner just came by last week and signed his bottles and a week before Enrico our
Veneto distributor poured it here and sold a whole lot on a Saturday. Really a
great food with salads, seafood, etcetera.
3) CM CASTELLUCCIMIANO 2011 Catarrato indigenous dry white Sicilian grape
variety ( $17.99, 13% alcohol by volume, ) is grown high up, way above sea
level. The owner was here with David Enright and his wines blew Michel and me
away and we have some of most of them. This is a medium-bodied, elegant dry
white that has subtle tones of mineral and citrus and a velvet-bright taste that
lilts and rocks your palate, like being pushed ever so smoothly while in a swing
... nice. This wine is special, really. Enjoy with or without a meal.
REDS :
1) CAPE ELEMENTS 2008 dry red South African Blend of Shiraz, Cinsault and
Grenache from Nico Van Der Merwe ( $17.99, 14% alcohol, Stellenbosch, South
Africa, www.wilhelmshof@xsinet.co.za ) is a medium-bodied Rhone style red with
some real polish, brightness and elegance. We tasted the 2009 on Saturday with
John and Theresa Morrison and it was a huge hit. Here we have the previous
vintage as well for less money and more bottle age. Perhaps buy a bottle of each
and compare and enjoy? Cheers.
2) ROBERT ALEXANDER 2008 Shiraz from Nico Van Der Merwe ( $19.99, 14%
alcohol by volume, www.34south.com, www.wilhelmshof@xsinet.co.za , Stellenbosch,
South Africa, ) was flavorful, good body and concentration and it was slow to
open and best with food. The next day it was more silky, with more distinct
flavors fully-developed and showing really well. In short, for me it was better
the second day than it was the first. No need to rush it, enjoy it with a meal
on the first day and if there's any left taste it the next day. Cheers.
VA. WINERIES Recommended By Steven Spurrier :
Steven Spurrier had his Caves De La Madeleine and his Academie Du Vin in Paris,
France off the Place De La Concorde in the early 1970's and in 1976 he conducted
a blind wine-tasting with both French and American judges of both California and
French wines and the French picked the American wines as better! What a scandal
ensued! He was just invited back by Virginia's Governor to do a similar
wine-tasting with both Virginia and other well-known/high quality wines. The
Virginia wines fared really well. Steven had some favorite wineries and wines.
Dave McIntyre of the Washington Post wrote up the results this past Wednesday.
Here are some of the wines we have and recommend from Steven's favorite wineries
:
CARDINAL POINT VINEYARD/WINERY:
Afton, Virginia -
1) 2009 Barrel Select Chardonnay from CARDINAL POINT Vineyard in Monticello
AVA , Virginia ( $19.99. 13.3% alcohol by volume, www.cardinalpointwinery.com )
has got that lovely buttery-oaky flavor that just rocks and cradles you ever so
gently-firmly-delightedly ...
2) Un-ion 2009 CARDINAL POINT Vineyard and Winery ( On Sale for $23.99 -
regularly $29.99. Afton, Virginia, 13.5% alcohol by volume ) is a lively, toasty
berry-cherry-spicy flavored , medium-bodied dry red blend of 40% Petit Verdot,
30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Tannat. Wow, it's tasty, distinct, fun and a
trend-setter, too. Try some!
3) Rockfish Red dry red blend 2010 from Virginia's CARDINAL POINT ( $20.99,
12.7% alcohol by volume, www.cardinalpointwinery.com, Afton, Virginia ) is
lighter, brighter, easier to sip and enjoy all by itself than the Un-ion above.
It's a treat and bright, fresh, lively and balanced. Enjoy some with or without
a meal in this warmer weather. Come and get one today and enjoy it later tonight
outside in your yard or on a picnic. Cheers.
We had owner Sarah come and pour all of these for you and it was a big
success. Her brother makes the wines and she promotes
them.
BOXWOOD ESTATE, Middleburg, VA.
1) " Topiary " 2008 ( $28.99, 13% alcohol by volume,
www.boxwoodwinery.com ) is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec grapes
from the ENTAV clones grown and processed in the traditional Bordeaux style :
low yields are harvested and sorted by hand ...Made like the Right-Bank wines of
Bordeaux. This 2008 should really be beginning to open and reveal some of it's
many charms. No need to rush. Buy it in the half bottles that we still have some
for $17.99 Boxwood and enjoy those while you wait patiently for these full
bottles to develop and mature. They will reward the patient. Steven Spurrier
tried the 2010 vintage and wrote about those.
2) " Boxwood " 2009 ( $29.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume,
www.boxwoodwinery.com ) is made like a classic Left Bank French Bordeaux wine
with a blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes from the
ENTAV clones ... It's heartier, bolder, thicker and usually more tannic and in
need of a meal than the " Topiary ". We have enjoyed them since the 2007 vintage
and with family member Rachel Martin's earlier visits here. She even helped me
conduct one of my Saturday wine classes. That was quite the fun and educational
experience. The 2009 are brighter and more fruit-forward than the 2008 vintage
wines. But they are made to age slowly and gracefully and again the patient of
you are all well-rewarded. Read above again about what I wrote of the two wines
enjoyed this weekend from the 1983 vintage to get some distance and perspective.
No need to rush. Buy some and put them away for later.
WINEWORKS From Michael Shaps,
Monticello, Virginia -
1) 2009 dry red blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon (
$16.99, 13% alcohol by volume, ) is fresh and smooth, silky, fruit-forward,
balanced , medium-to-light-bodied and a delight to drink all by itself or enjoy
with a meal, inside or outside. Refreshing. Steven Spurrier talked about Michael
Shaps and his wine-making skills.
ONE MORE RED, From California :
1) ZERO-RIDE 36 BOSS Red Tailgate Wine , a 2009 Lake County, California
Merlot ( $17.99, 14.1% alcohol by volume , www.jarthurcellars.com, Calistoga, CA
) is silky, subtle, delicate, fine and so easy to enjoy with or without a meal.
It's a great tailgate party wine and we still have a few bottles left. Come and
get some before we are all sold-out. No more available.
SAKE . Imported, Nigori :
1) Yaegaki Nigori sake ( $18.99, 720ml bottle, 16% alcohol by volume, ) :
" ... Samurai Sake, by our original process of blending. Well-balanced silky
and creamy texture is complemented by a touch of sweetness, yet enough acidity
maintains its refreshing finish. Keep refrigerated to maintain its original
taste ... "
2) Jon-Mai Kimoto from KURUSAWA Sake Brewery ( $51.99, 1.8ml , 15% alcohol
y volume ) is , of course the large format and you can keep it refrigerated as
well. It will not go off or spoil. It. too - like all sakes - has no sulfites
and so does not give people the headaches like some wines do. Enjoy and cheers.
